Current Curricular Objectives

Current Curricular Objectives - March 15th

We will use 'I can' to help students feel empowered and an active member of their learning.

Please note: We will share our planned curricular objectives at the beginning of each week to keep an ongoing conversation going between home and school. However, due to the generative nature of our program and remaining responsive to student need, we may deviate from these.

Language Arts

I can read to myself, read to someone else, listen to reading, and practice writing every day!
  • I can use a numbered list to write a set of instructions for completing a task (ex. making a peanut butter sandwich).
  • I can use transition words (ex. First, second, next, then, afterwards) to organize my numbered list into a cohesive procedural paragraph.
  • I can use strategies from Lively letters to break words into syllables and decode their sounds.
  • I can identify picture clues in illustrations to enhance understanding and use this evidence from the text to make inferences and justify my thinking.
Math

I can look for math in my everyday life (ex. cooking with my family, measuring for a home improvement project, estimating cost in a shopping list, checking the temperature each day).

I can practice my math facts (adding, subtracting, multiplication (up to 5x5)) each day by playing fun games!
  • I can use mental math strategies (ex. counting on, doubles, doubles +/- 1, fact families, skip counting) to recall understand addition and subtraction math facts to 18.
  • I can describe and apply mental math strategies for adding/subtracting two digit numbers.
  • I can demonstrate an understanding of adding/subtracting to 1000 (including regrouping) using pictures, numbers, and words.
  • I can use manipulatives (ex. hundreds chart, number line, place value blocks) to demonstrate my understanding of adding and subtracting, including word problems.

Science

I can stay curious, ask lots of questions, investigate things I am interested in! Going outside and keeping a journal to sketch and record questions, observations, connections, and wonders in is a great way to do this!
  • I can build something from my imagination using the variety of materials available to me.
  • I can make a plan for my creation first, including a labelled sketch and list of materials.
  • I can document and reflect on the building process (ex. what was successful, what was challenging, what I would do differently next time).

Social Studies

I can talk about how identity is shaped for different groups of people when reading books and watching movies (ex. consider where they live, what they have access to, what they value, activities they participate in)
  • I can examine maps to gain an understanding of how these features (ex. geography, natural resources, temperature, topography, population) might shape the culture and identity of a nation.
  • I can identify key features of a map (ex. scale, cardinal directions)
  • I can use the Kiddle search engine to begin to research the Ukraine and record jot notes in my own words.

Health

I can focus on eating well, sleeping well, and being active and mindful each day.
  • I can practice mindfulness techniques I have learned.
  • I can practice gratitude by sharing 3 things I am grateful for as a family during a shared meal.
  • I can keep a journal/draw a picture to identify my emotions
  • I can find picture books where the characters are experiencing emotions I can make personal connections with, and talk about them together with my family.
  • I can show my family different breathing techniques (ex. box breath, pizza breathing, breathing worries into bubbles) to practice mindfulness.
